Natural Silk Out: What to Do (and Avoid) in First 48 Hours for Smooth Hair Extensions and Everyday Styling

By Design 25 Salon | August 3, 2026

Natural Silk Out aftercare in the first 48 hours for smooth, frizz-free hair

The most important rule after your Natural Silk Out is simple: keep your hair dry and low-moisture for 48 hours. That means no shampoo, no soaking sweat sessions, and no “just a little water” moments. We’re intentional about keeping your hair healthy and beautiful, and these first two days are where your smoothness and shine really lock in. If you’re in Indianapolis and humidity is already doing the most, this matters even more.

Your first 24 to 48 hours: protect the finish you just paid for

Natural Silk Out is a deep conditioning treatment plus a silk-out finish (our service runs about 2 hours and 15 minutes). Right after, your hair tends to feel smooth, shiny, and easier to manage. The goal now is keeping that finish intact.

48-hour non-negotiables: No shampooing, no swimming pools, no sauna/steam rooms, and keep tight hats and headbands to a minimum. Moisture plus pressure is how creases and frizz sneak back in fast.

If you have to be out and about in the Old Northside or Near North area, plan like it’s July even if it’s not. Indianapolis weather changes quick, and a surprise rain or a sweaty walk can undo the sleek look faster than you’d think.

Commuting, errands, and “I still have to live my life” tips

We generally recommend skipping heavy workouts for 48 to 72 hours. If you can’t, keep it cooler and lighter, then let your scalp dry fully. A light spray dry shampoo at the roots can help manage sweat, and cool-air ventilation in your car or on the bus helps more than blasting heat.

And yes, you can still wear your hair with extensions or clip-ins, but keep clips and combs gentle. If you’re using a hair clip with extension for a quick style, don’t clamp it right on your edges and don’t stack clips in one spot. Spread the weight out so you don’t create dents.

Days 3 to 7: keep it smooth, keep it healthy, don’t overdo the heat

Once you hit that 48-hour mark, you’ve got more freedom. But the first week is where we see the biggest difference between “still flawless” and “I’m already fighting frizz.” Our team puts a lot of care into keeping hair healthy, so we’re big on habits that protect your strands, not just the style.

  • Wash day: Keep water cool to lukewarm. Hot water lifts the cuticle and invites puffiness back in.
  • Heat styling: Limit it. If you need a quick pass with a flat iron, use one or two passes, not five. Wrap or pin your hair at night instead of re-pressing every morning.
  • Humidity management: Indianapolis summers are no joke. If you’re walking to Mass Ave or heading to a concert, carry a travel-size anti-frizz spray and a soft scrunchie, not a tight elastic.
  • Hands off: Don’t rake your fingers through it all day. Friction adds frizz and breaks the smooth finish down.

A lot of our regulars tell us they get compliments even while their hair is growing out. That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the small stuff done consistently.

Sulfate-free shampoo, humidity blockers, and the routine that keeps shine

After your Natural Silk Out, keep your cleanser gentle. We like a sulfate-free, low-suds shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner that gives slip without leaving a heavy coating. You want clean hair that still moves.

Our go-to product “types” (simple, not a 12-step routine)

  • Humidity blockers: light silicone- or polymer-based serums/sprays. These are your best friend in Indianapolis humidity.
  • Lightweight heat protectant: if you’re using hot tools at all, don’t skip this.
  • Skip layered oils: too many oils stacked can weigh hair down and make it look dull faster, especially on thick or extra-long hair.

If you wear clip ins for hair extensions, keep your routine lightweight around the attachment area. Heavy creams plus hair clips for clip in extensions can lead to slip and tangling. Clean, dry, and smooth is the goal.

Sleep tips that prevent creases: pillowcase, wrap, and a loose tie

The first few nights matter because your hair is still settling into that silky shape. We recommend a silk or satin pillowcase and a loose wrap. If wrapping isn’t your thing, tie your hair low and loose with a soft scrunchie, then use a silk scarf to keep it smooth.

Avoid going to bed with damp hair, even if it’s “just a little.” That’s when you wake up with bends at the roots and puffiness through the mid-lengths. If you got caught in rain, dry it fully with cool to low heat and smooth it gently with a brush, not aggressive combing.

If you’re waking up with a small crease, don’t panic and crank the flat iron. Often a little steam-free smoothing with a low-temp tool and a tiny amount of anti-frizz serum is enough.

When to reach out to our Indianapolis team (and how we help fast)

If something feels off, tell us sooner rather than later. We’re big on education and making sure you feel confident leaving the salon, and that doesn’t stop when you walk out the door.

A little extra volume at the roots after a couple days can be normal, especially if you’re sweating in summer or you got caught in humidity. What we want to know about is stubborn frizz that won’t smooth down, heavy product buildup, or tangling that’s new for you.

We’re right here for our Old Northside and Near North neighbors, and we also see clients across Indianapolis, Broad Ripple, Meridian‑Kessler, Butler‑Tarkington, Fountain Square, and Irvington. If you need a quick maintenance appointment or you want help adjusting your at-home routine, we’ll talk you through it and get you back to easy, manageable hair.

Wait at least 48 hours before shampooing. That first 48-hour window is where your smooth finish holds best, so keep water, steam, and heavy moisture off your hair.

Yes, you can still commute and live your life, but we generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating for 48 to 72 hours. If you must work out or you’re on the bus in warm weather, keep things cool, use a light dry shampoo at the roots, and let your scalp dry fully.

Rain and humidity can shorten how long your hair stays super sleek, especially in Indianapolis summer weather. If you get caught outside, dry your hair fully with cool-to-low heat and use a light humidity-blocking serum or spray instead of layering heavy oils.

Go with a sulfate-free, low-suds shampoo and keep water cool to lukewarm. Gentle cleansing helps you stay smooth without stripping your hair or making it puff back up.

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase and keep your hair secured loosely. Wrapping is great, but a low, loose scrunchie and a silk scarf also works well. Skip going to bed with damp hair because that’s when creases and frizz show up fast.

Keep the first 48 hours dry, then stick with sulfate-free cleansing and lightweight anti-frizz products. Around extension attachment areas, avoid heavy creams and thick oils that can cause slip and tangling. If you want help choosing what works for your hair and install, tell us what type of extensions you’re wearing and we’ll guide you.

It can be, but keep clips gentle and avoid clamping them tightly near your edges or stacking several in one spot. Spreading the weight out helps prevent dents and creases while your hair is staying smooth.

Use lightweight products so your clip-ins stay secure and your hair doesn’t get weighed down. Make sure your hair is fully dry before installing, and remove clip-ins before sleeping to reduce friction and creasing.

Choose clips that feel smooth and secure, and place them where they won’t pinch or pull. Avoid tight placement along your hairline, and don’t over-tighten because pressure plus moisture can create dents and frizz.
