Full Sewin Aftercare: First 2 Weeks, Do's, Don'ts & Timeline (hair colorist-approved habits)

By Design 25 Salon | July 25, 2026

One of our guests told us she avoided salons for years because she “almost never got exactly what I asked for, ” then came to Design 25 Salon and finally felt heard. So let’s protect that fresh Full Sewin the right way. The biggest rule is simple: don’t wash or soak your Full Sewin for the first 24–48 hours. Skip heavy sweating, swimming, and tight styles so your tracks stay secure and your blend stays smooth.

Full Sewin aftercare timeline for the first two weeks at Design 25 Salon in Indianapolis

Your Full Sewin appointment is about 225 minutes and includes cleansing, a full install, cutting, and styling for a natural finish. A lot of guests describe their result as “very natural, very sleek, ” and we want it looking like that long after you leave our Old Northside salon.

First 24–48 hours: lock in your install (and avoid track friction)

The first two days are about keeping the foundation calm. We generally recommend no washing, no soaking, and no heavy sweating. That means hot yoga, long sauna sessions, and anything that leaves your scalp drenched can wait. In Indianapolis, July and August humidity can have you sweating faster than you expect, so keep your first couple days low-key if you can.

Skip hats that rub. Tight baseball caps and anything with a stiff seam tends to create friction right where you don’t want it. If you need a cover, go loose and smooth on the inside. And don’t pull your hair back hard “extra neat” for work. A tight ponytail can put stress on your leave-out and edges right away.

Quick check: A little scalp sensitivity is common after an install. Sharp pain, constant pulling, or bumps that feel hot to the touch are not. If something feels off, let us know early so we can take a look.

Days 3–7: your first wash, sweat rules, and keeping it “natural and sleek”

After that 48-hour window, you can usually wash, but the goal is clean scalp without saturating everything for no reason. Use a sulfate-free shampoo, and we like it diluted a bit with water so it spreads easier through your roots. Focus on the scalp. Let the lather run through the hair instead of roughing up the lengths.

Rinse well. Then dry thoroughly. This is the part people rush, and it’s the part that can lead to that musty smell or a foundation that starts acting loose. Use a towel to blot, not rub, and take the time to dry the base. If you’re using heat, keep it controlled and keep your attention on the tracks and scalp area first.

Working out is fine later, but in week one we generally suggest keeping sweat to a minimum. If you do sweat, don’t leave it sitting. Cool down, gently cleanse the scalp if needed, and dry the base again. Indianapolis summer sweat plus friction is how frizz and tension creep in.

Night move that matters: Wrap with a silk scarf or bonnet, then put hair in a low, loose pony or a braid. Less friction equals less frizz and a cleaner blend.

Week 2: swim rules, product habits, and keeping your scalp happy

For the first two weeks, we want you treating chlorinated pools and lake days like a real risk to your sew-in. Chlorine and salt water can dry out hair fast and leave buildup at the base. Our general rule is avoid swimming for at least two weeks. If you end up around water anyway, keep hair up and out, and don’t let the foundation stay damp.

If you get exposed, rinse promptly, condition lightly, and dry the base. Don’t go to bed with wet tracks. That’s when odor and matting like to show up.

This is also a good time to check your product habits. Heavy oils and thick butters can build up at the scalp and make the foundation feel itchy. Use lightweight leave-in sparingly, keep your parts clean, and don’t pick at the base. Picking turns a small itch into a real issue.

A simple routine that protects your $350 Full Sewin

We keep aftercare simple because you got a Full Sewin to save time, not add homework. Here’s what tends to keep installs looking fresh between appointments.

Cleanse smart

Sulfate-free shampoo, focused on scalp, then rinse like you mean it. If your scalp gets dry, use a light scalp moisturizer, not a heavy oil that sits at the base.

Dry the foundation every time

Damp tracks are the fastest way to lose that fresh feel. Blot, then dry the base thoroughly before you style or wrap.

Protect at night

Silk scarf or bonnet plus a low, loose pony or braid. You’ll wake up with less tangling and a smoother blend.

If you want the bigger picture, we broke it down in our Full Sewin benefits guide for long-lasting volume. And if you’re comparing methods, our hair extensions services in Indianapolis overview helps you sort through options like micro-links, unit installs, and more.

When to text us, when to come in, and your 4–6 week tightening plan

If you’re in the Old Northside area just north of downtown Indianapolis, we’re an easy stop before Mass Ave plans or a White River event. And we’d rather check something early than have you tough it out at home.

Reach out if you notice persistent itching that doesn’t calm down, slipping tracks, or tension that makes you feel like you need to loosen your style just to be comfortable. Our team is known for being welcoming and professional, and we take the time to explain what’s going on so you’re not guessing.

Plan your maintenance check or tightening around 4 to 6 weeks. That timing helps protect your natural hair and keeps the install looking neat. We see guests come in from Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington, Fountain Square, and Irvington for quick follow-ups, especially when they’ve got photos, weddings, or a packed weekend and want everything sitting right.

A Full Sewin should not feel like constant pulling. Protect your edges by avoiding tight ponytails, heavy styles, and anything that adds tension at your hairline, especially in the first two weeks. If you feel sharp pain or ongoing tightness, reach out so we can check it.

Sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet, or use a silk pillowcase. We also recommend putting your hair in a low, loose ponytail or a braid to reduce friction, tangling, and frizz overnight.

Yes. Our team includes hair colorists, and we do color services alongside extensions and other hair services. If you want color with your extensions, let us know when you book so we can plan timing and keep everything looking blended.

Hair dyes can impact how well everything blends, especially between your natural hair and the extension hair. If you’re thinking about coloring, talk with our team first so we can choose the right approach and keep your finished look consistent.

Dark blonde hair color can be a great option if you want brightness without going too light. If you’re pairing it with a Full Sewin, we’ll talk through tone and blend so your leave-out and extensions look natural together.
